By now, the Alsos had issued another report about Germany’s atomic bomb project. The report stated that German research in 1940 and 1941 had kept pace with American research. But in the summer of 1942, German physicists accidentally destroyed their first nuclear reactor. After that, the Germans were never close to the United States in building a working bomb.

With the Allies closing in on Berlin, Germany, the war in Europe was finally coming to an end. Realizing that he was defeated, Adolf Hitler committed suicide on April 30, 1945. German leaders officially surrendered on May 7, 1945. But World War II was not over. The United States was still battling Japan, with no end in sight.
